Service Providers and OTT - WebRTC Game Changer?
RTC-06
Dean Bubley

Disruptive Analysis
WebRTC could be the biggest threat and opportunity in the Service Provider market since deregulation & the advent of broadband. It has the potential to move or displace billions of dollars of revenue from existing telephony services to new socalled “Over The Top” players, or to fuel advanced services that will enable the existing players to extend their business for years to come. How WebRTC is perceived and used will drive the transition – will capabilities be delivered as billable “services”, or just embedded as “features” or “functions” of other apps or the browser itself? This session will focus on how Service Providers, vendors and Internet/IT peers should look at WebRTC, where they should participate, and how it may change the landscape.

Extending 4G Communications with WebRTC
RTC-25
Anne Lee
CTO, Advanced Communications Solutions Innovations
Alcatel Lucent
With the advent of smartphones, tablets, and mobile app stores, the demand on wireless bandwidth is exploding. Operators are responding to this demand by the introduction of 4G – LTE. Along with 4G – LTE data is the corresponding migration of operator wireless communications services to an All–IP multi–access solution called IMS – IP Multimedia Subsystem. More specifically, the 4G wireless version of this solution is called VoLTE.This session will look at 3 key areas driving the convergence of 4G–LTE + IMS + WebRTC. First is an overview of the wireless market trends propelling operators to All–IP. Second will be a review of the standards evolution and attributes of LTE and IMS to address the limitations of today’s current systems. The third area examines the integration of WebRTC with IMS including E2E application solution examples that utilize WebRTC – thereby, extending 4G communications into and leveraging the value of the web.

We have invited Jas Dhillon, Phil Edholm, Carl Ford, Martin Geddes, Jason Hoffman, to judge the demos and to determine five award winners based on the judging criteria. The awards are as follows•Ready Now Award – This award is associated with solutions that are out in the market and available today that utilize WebRTC•Best Conferencing – awards the company that has the most innovative incorporation of WebRTC with the mixing and delivering of media conferencing. The expectation is that conferencing include audio but social, text and video can be included.•Beyond the Call – awards the best website implementation that uses WebRTC to communicate in a form other than a phone call.•Visionary Award looks for innovation that is designed as a framework to enable third party innovation. •The Best WebRTC Demo is the overall winner is not associated with a specific category. The award is about the presentation of the implementation during the event. Are you ready for the Real Time? Then you should show it off. If you haven’t built your app yet. Stay for the demonstration.

With more than a billion new mobile smart devices in 2015, WebRTC will have a plethora of deployment options and platforms. This session will examine some of the issues and how WebRTC will be deployed in the mobile world. Access to the World Wide Web is happening more and more through the window of a mobile device. With web sites reporting rising usage of mobile versions of their content, and the lines between The Web, and apps on mobile platforms are blurred. How will WebRTC impact The Mobile Web? This session examines the promise and perils of bringing WebRTC to the world of Mobility. The lack of interoperability between browsers and mobile devices has been a major barrier for developers looking to embrace WebRTC. As fragmentation of devices, browsers and networks continue to grow, it becomes increasingly difficult to develop an application that just works, no matter who your end user is. This session will explore how existing live video platforms are leveraging WebRTC to provide developers with the quality benefits WebRTC has to offer, while providing a flexible, customizable mobile development tool.

While simple WebRTC sessions can be created with as little as 40 lines of Java Script, creating well managed and behaved user experiences require thoughtful design and careful implementation. Just as the tools to develop web sites and other applications have made the developer’s job easier by building on top of well defined capabilities and SDKs, WebRTC promises to have a new set of building blocks. In this session, early developers of WebRTC toolkits will discuss how their offers will reduce time to market and improve performance, reliability and user acceptance.

Martin Körling
Head of Research Silicon Valley

WebRTC is moving rapidly from standardization into reality. The focus now is on how to make use of WebRTC as a tool, and on what role WebRTC will play in future solutions for communication. There are many ways to segment the evolving landscape of solutions: consumer/enterprise, web/telecom, vertical/horizontal, standalone/integrated/contextual, mobile/fixed, etc. This points to the need for a platform approach, with core components and flexibility for integration, based on REST interfaces.Of key importance is to leverage open innovation, driven by mobile broadband, advanced devices, and cloud software. Concrete examples show both how communication is added to vertical services and how horizontal enterprise communication can be enhanced. Carriers have key assets to build on, for example the universal address space of phone numbers and a scalable interconnected infrastructure.
