Northside Impact Committee offers scholarships

REDLANDS, May 22, 2012 (Redlands Daily Facts - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Northside Impact Committee is offering educational scholarships.

Applications are available and will be accepted now through Sept. 7.

Applicants must be enrolling in college or other higher learning establishment for the 2012-13 school year.

This year, scholarships are open to seniors graduating from high school within the Redlands Unified School District with at least a C average.

"The main purpose of this is to try to encourage students to continue with higher education," said committee chairman Ediberto Flores III. " There are times when students fall on hard times, so the money can assist with that or to buy books. It's not a full scholarship, but it could carry them over to get them Where to find applications * Redlands High School, Counseling Center, 804 E. Citrus Ave.

started." Application requirements include a 300-word essay and two letters of recommendation.

The awarding of scholarships will be held at the committee's annual recognition and scholarship awards event planned for Oct. 6 at the Orton Center at the University of Redlands, 1200 E. Colton Ave.

Last year's recipients were Epigmenio J.D. Robles, Carissa Ashton Almendarez, Alyssa Estrada, Caitlin Eberhardt, Felpe De La Cruz, Madeline Long and Nery Ganbay.

The group will also recognize members of the community who have made an impact through leadership.

Flores said the biggest reward his group gets is through hearing back from members of the community who have received a scholarship from the group.

"They sometimes will call back and say, 'You know, that was a big help for us. I needed the books or I needed my car fixed or I needed for the school year and your scholarship helped,"' he said. "That's where the reward comes in." For more information, call 909-798-7130.
