Newly-established Slovak mobile operator Swan to start testing 4G services in early April [IntelliNews - Weekly Reports]

(IntelliNews - Weekly Reports Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Swan, the newest player on the Slovak mobile market, plans to start testing its 4G network at the beginning of April, Pravda daily reported citing company board chairman Juraj Ondris,. The company will test technology before launching its services in September as planned, Ondris said.

Earlier this year, Swan said it targets to cover at least 25% of the country's population by the end of 2014.

Swan, together with the country's three existing mobile phone operators, bought frequencies for fourth-generation (4G) networks in a tender last year. Slovakia's telecommunications regulator TUSR said it raised EUR 163.4mn from the sale of the frequencies as Swan paid EUR 6.6mn for frequencies in the 1,800 MHz band. Under the conditions of the tender, the operators' LTE networks should cover at least 25% of Slovakia's population by the end of 2015 and half of it by end-2018.

Swan will focus mainly on data services. Due to the fact that the company has frequencies only in the 1,800 MHz band it has said that would cooperate with one of the existing mobile operators, most likely with Telefonica Slovakia. Swan targets to attract some 500,000 clients within two years.
