VMware and GigaSpaces Collaborate to Drive Open Network Functions Virtualization Orchestration

VMware, Inc., (NYSE:VMW) and GigaSpaces (News - Alert) today announced a collaboration to advance open, standards-based orchestration for network functions virtualization (NFV) applications. The availability of TOSCA (Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications)-based Cloudify from GigaSpaces to support the VMware vCloud® NFV™ Platform provides customers choice in open NFV orchestration for Telco Cloud environments.

Implementing NFV requires a robust NFV infrastructure, and the agility provided by comprehensive NFV and multi-cloud orchestration, to deliver complete virtualized network services to customers. GigaSpaces Cloudify is an open source TOSCA -based cloud orchestration software platform. VMware vCloud NFV is a carrier-grade, production-proven NFV services delivery, operations and management platform that offers a common platform and operating model to enable multi-vendor, multi-domain services.

When used together, Cloudify with vCloud NFV can enable carriers to leverage VMware infrastructure assets and skillsets, with open source TOSCA-based orchestration from GigaSpaces. Cloudify with vCloud NFV users can deploy virtual network functions (VNFs) over hybrid cloud architectures, achieving automated lifecycle management of critical network functions and services. Customers can correlate information gathered through the VMware infrastructure with application requirements gathered through Cloudify to help deliver the best performance and utilization of the underlying resources. As part of this collaboration, GigaSpaces will be developing a VMware vRealize Operations Management Pack™ that will enable infrastructure, event correlation, event notification and response, and policy management, enabling closed loop service remediation, proactive capacity planning and scaling.

Cloudify with vCloud NFV was featured in the VMware NFV Hands-On-Lab at VMworld US 2016 and will be featured again at VMworld® Europe 2016.

"GigaSpaces and VMware see the value to customers in an open, standards-based framework for orchestration that gives customers control and agility as they move to the cloud with NFV," said Zeev Bikowsky, Chief Executive Officer at GigaSpaces. "Our collaboration will further support our ongoing efforts in the development of open source NFV/MANO orchestration based on TOSCA."

"VMware is playing a central role in the evolution and adoption of FV by communications service providers," said Gabriele Di Piazza, vice president of solutions, Telco NFV Group at VMware. "We are pleased to see our relationship with GigaSpaces leading to robust open source orchestration solutions that offer our mutual customers choice in NFV foundational technologies."
