TokBox to Participate in Hack Mental Health to Demonstrate Power of Live Video in Telehealth

TokBox, the live video, real-time communications (RTC) company, today announced it is sponsoring and participating in Hack Mental Health, a 24-hour event focused on hands-on learning and partnership with the mental health space, including academia, industry, and entrepreneurs. The event is taking place February 3-4 at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) Campus in San Francisco.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five adults experience mental illness in a given year, and 46% of homeless adults live with severe mental illness and/or substance abuse disorders. Hack Mental Health will bring together mental health practitioners, survivors and friends of loved ones who have suffered from mental health illnesses, and technology providers to help drive innovation in the mental health space.

The TokBox (News - Alert) Live Video API is finding increasing success in the healthcare market, enabling developers to quickly add video capabilities to the application workflow. In addition to virtual mental health support and counseling, the TokBox API serves a wide range of healthcare applications, from remote doctor consultations to medical imaging collaboration and on-demand wellness and fitness.

According to the results of the inaugural TokBox Live Video Maturity Study, 60 percent of people either have or are likely to uselive video to chat with a doctor about a non-emergency condition. Examples of healthcare providers already leveraging live video to provide quality care include:

  • BetterHelp, the world's largest e-counseling platform, providing convenient, affordable, private online counseling with a licensed professional therapist.
  • IntheRooms, the world's largest online social network for the global recovery community, which offers free live video meetings for people seeking help from any addiction.
  • Maven, a digital clinic for women that connects patients via video appointments with a network of doctors, nurse practitioners, mental health providers, and specialists in all areas of women's and children's health.

"The healthcare market is undergoing a seismic shift in how providers deliver care, and the ability to easily and inexpensively integrate live video into a company's offerings is a game changer," noted TokBox CEO Scott Lomond. "With mental health being at the forefront of key issues facing the medical community, we are very much looking forward to working with Hack Mental Health participants to find ways to improve mental health care."
