WebRTC World Week in Review

While Web-based real time communications (WebRTC) is still something of a new concept, the amount of news it's generating can get downright staggering in a week. This week, meanwhile, would prove to be no exception as plenty of exciting news emerged in the sector. Therefore, with a hard-earned weekend close at hand, let's take the opportunity to go over some of the biggest points of the week with our week in review coverage.

First came word about a new coalition between Voipro and FirmTel, which engaged each other in a strategic cooperation agreement geared toward bringing the two firms' specialties to the table in a bid to create a new and more valuable whole. The result is a fixed and mobile solution allowing small and medium-sized businesses to get more out of their mobile devices, a front in communications that hasn't been quite as robustly developed as its fixed alternative.

Priologic Software brought out the next major bit of news thanks to an entire lineup of new products to be unveiled at Enterprise Connect 2013, the easyRTC Enterprise and WebRTC Enterprise Management System. The two systems combined are set to bring out not only a faster time-to-market for users looking to add WebRTC capabilities to their product lines, but also a better overall capability for the products that use WebRTC in general. Priologic will also be hosting special events at Enterprise Connect 2013, complete with giveaways and free food.

Next was word from Prezi, whose PowerPoint competing presentation software managed to not only add several new features like sound effects and musical tracks to its already impressive array of functions, but also added word about a critical new user milestone. Prezi is now being used by more than 20 million different users out to perk up their presentations in a way that PowerPoint hasn't been bringing to the table of late. With "PowerPoint Fatigue" still on many users' minds, Prezi is offering a compelling alternative that adds to the overall substance of presentations by making them more accessible.

Teamups were all the rage this week as Vidtel and Compunetix brought out their own collaborative effort in the form of a way to bring together video conferencing equipment with WebRTC-based browser technology. A combination of the Vidtel Gateway and Compunetix's EVERGREEN conferencing platform, the result is an improved means for carrying out collaboration functions. Bringing video conferencing systems to WebRTC platforms is an excellent way to expand the overall functionality of such systems, and make them more valuable overall to their users.

Finally, there was a closer look at the actual value and the inherent implications of WebRTC. While the system itself, as mentioned previously, is still new, there are still plenty of impressive applications contained within the concept. That has users from enterprise clear down to consumer considering the overall implications of the WebRTC trend, and in turn, fueling the development of further applications for the WebRTC concept. While there are still problems with the concept, especially around over which codecs to use, the overall idea has so much opportunity to be realized that there's a lot of development going on.

That was the week that was in WebRTC, and with present developments and future possibilities intermingling so clearly, there's a lot to keep track of. That's kept our global online community active in terms of tracking down the best news to bring back, so be sure to come back here next week for more news in WebRTC, and of course, every weekend for our week in review!
