Twilio Becomes a Google Cloud Platform Partner, Brings Voice and Messaging to App Developers

Cloud communications company Twilio joined the Google Cloud Platform Program, expanding the reach of Twilio's API platform as developers who use Google's App Engine can now leverage the Twilio platform to integrate voice and messaging into apps. According to Twilio, this is the first time that a service offering voice and messaging has been integrated with Google's Cloud Platform.

This is the second major announcement made by Twilio in the last few weeks, as the company only just introduced SIP from Twilio in the latter half of March.

Google's Cloud Platform allows developers to build applications and websites on the company's servers. Google benefits by storing and analyzing the data generated by users of the platform, while users are able to scale apps and focus on building those apps rather than infrastructure and IT issues. Furthermore, users of Google Cloud Platform pay only for what they use, similar to Amazon's EC2 cloud service.

Users of the platform also have access to a number of Google products, one of which is Google's App Engine, which basically acts as a resource for app builders. As of today, this includes in-app dialing, conference calling, group texting, mobile app distribution and two-factor authentication thanks to Twilio's integration.

"By using Google Cloud Platform and Twilio, independent developers and enterprises alike can build and scale real world businesses faster than ever," said Twilio CEO Jeff Lawson in a statement. "The real magic comes from connecting the Twilio API to the App Engine platform to make apps communicate; developers benefit from integrating these two incredibly scalable, robust, and reliable platforms — we can't wait to see what Google App Engine developers build."

Those looking to integrate Twilio's services can do so through a service upgrade, which provides 2,000 SMS or inbound messages. From there, customers will pay typical Google Cloud Platform fees on top of additional fees from Twilio's offering.

Specific Twilio APIs offered on the Google platform include Twilio Voice, Twilio SMS and Twilio Client, which enables VoIP calling from any phone, tablet or WebRTC-enabled browser.
