WebRTC World Week in Review

It was a big week once again for Web-based real time communications (WebRTC), and as a result there was plenty of news to emerge in the field. With plenty coming out to talk about in the week, and the weekend on our collective doorstep, it's a good time to step back and take a look at what happened in the week that was with our Week in Review coverage.

First we had a look at the Ornish Spectrum, a major wellness brand, and its intent to put more WebRTC in its platform with the addition of Ondello systems. Integrating the Ondello systems into the Ornish Spectrum allows for more rapid one-on-one communications between experts in the field, no matter whether those experts are actively engaged in the Ornish Spectrum or trying to get in on the action. This is actually part of the Ornish Spectrum's larger goals, and keeping users connected across the entire scope of users is very important to the group.

Then we had a closer look at the idea of WebRTC, and how rapidly it's approaching on a consumer level. It was only in March that some demonstrations were starting to emerge, using a Macbook Air laptop and a Nexus tablet powered by Android, but the demonstrations have already begun to bear fruit in several actual customer-accessible areas. WebRTC is progressively gaining, and as such, that prompted a closer look at the ways WebRTC may change communications on a personal and professional level.

Next came a look at Fresh Tilled Soil's WebRTC-based chat widget, which allows for the easy installation of video chatting systems on any standard Web page. Users looking to install the Fresh Tilled Soil widget need only establish a channel name, as opposed to other, similar systems that require logging into or linking to a social network account. Once the channel name is in place, users follow a simple link to the channel and chatting can begin, as long as both users in question are using a browser compatible with WebRTC.

WebRTC's impact is showing up across a wide swath of different fields, from personal to commercial, and across the sector besides. But one of the biggest sectors to rethink its operations in the face of oncoming WebRTC is customer service. WebRTC is changing the field in more than just how people make contact with businesses and with each other; WebRTC also opens up a new way for businesses to make contact with individual customers. With WebRTC set to make major inroads by the end of this year, it behooves businesses to have a plan in place for how to adapt to this new technology.

Finally, we had a closer look at some of Huawei's WebRTC plans, as the communications company looks to introduce a rich communications capability exposure gateway. Boasting support for rich communications services (RCS) enablement, and delivering that support via the Web directly, the gateway focuses on providing more than just voice and video, offering ICT interoperability as well as a simple JavaScript-based interface.

Clearly, it was a huge week in WebRTC. With more companies and individuals taking advantage of an increasingly wide array of products and services in the field, more companies are looking to provided these products and services.
