Dialogic WebRTC Impact Survey Goes Beyond Speculation to Find WebRTC's Real Disruptive Potential

WebRTC is in its early stages. This does not mean that the technology is not already advancing, innovative or changing the way we communicate. In fact, WebRTC is constantly growing: standards are improved on every day, adoption is growing and it has been categorized as a game-changing technology by many. Industry analysts, developers and executives have been speculating for many months about just what capabilities WebRTC will offer, the many different uses and industries it can be applied to and what communication will be like one, five and 10 years from now. But that’s all it’s really been—speculation.

Dialogic, the Network Fuel company that helps elevate the performance of media-rich communications across networks, recently conducted a study, the 2013 WebRTC Impact Survey, to go beyond market speculation and find out more about the adoption and disruptive potential of WebRTC.

For those who predicted that video conferencing and contact center communications would be the primary points of adoption for WebRTC, you’ll be surprised to hear that the survey found 37.7 percent of respondents think WebRTC offers a broader benefit to unified communications solutions. More than 35 percent of respondents believe WebRTC will make a more immediate breakthrough in the education market as opposed to the enterprise.

“WebRTC is viewed as a game-changing technology because of its ubiquity in the market and the expectation that nearly all devices with a Web browser will eventually be enabled. Forecast to approach one billion devices by the end of 2013, the WebRTC installed base provides a broad platform for those firms able to build, deploy and scale compelling applications or services,” the survey explained.

One thing is for sure – WebRTC is growing fast. The survey found that 49 percent of respondents intend to deploy a WebRTC solution within the next year. This is evident in the attendance at the WebRTC Conference and Expo, which is being held this week in Atlanta, Ga. The show floor was expanded twice due to an overwhelming response to the workshops, sessions, exhibitors and educational resources available at the conference. In addition, the conference will cover business impacts of WebRTC, including changes in communications and economic impacts, as well as development for WebRTC standards, education and products.

Dialogic is a platinum sponsor and exhibitor at the WebRTC Conference and Expo. Jim Machi, vice president of product management at Dialogic, is a keynote speaker at the event and Antony Martin, director of product development at Dialogic, will present in a panel session titled, “Back-office and Security Implications of WebRTC” to discuss the issues in provisioning, billing and other back office functions as well as a new security dimension and solutions that should be considered as WebRTC is introduced.

“For several months now, we have heard varying opinions on the viability and disruptive potential of WebRTC, running the spectrum from ‘Skype-killer’ to ‘pure hype.’ To gain more real-world insight, Dialogic did what we do best: we listened to our customer base,” said Andrew Goldberg, senior vice president of marketing and strategy for Dialogic, in a statement. “An overwhelming 86.9 percent of respondents revealed that WebRTC is significant to their overall product roadmaps. The survey underscores the importance for service providers and application developers to have access to solutions that help them quickly monetize the WebRTC opportunity.”
