WebRTC World Week in Review

It was another major week in terms of Web-based real time communications (WebRTC), and with so much clearly going on in the field, it's worth taking a step back for some closer examination of some of the biggest news to arrive. With the weekend now at hand, it's a great time to do just that with our Week in Review coverage!

First, a new survey out from Dialogic revealed that, despite the fact that WebRTC was a comparatively new technology, it was also a technology that was very much desired. Dialogic's survey, which tackled the opinions of 169 “key decision makers” in both telecom applications development and service provider industries, found that WebRTC was not only a major part of future product development, but also was a bit more likely to have impact on the education market ahead of the enterprise market. But solutions for WebRTC were rapidly coming, with almost half planning a release in the next 12 months.

Next, we took a look at one of the biggest things to hit the WebRTC Conference and Expo: vLine's video chat system. The system managed to land the “Best Conferencing Award” at the show, mostly owing to its ability to create a complete private video chat system, essentially from the ground up. The vLine video chat system not only allows for individual company branding, but also complete control over user databases and the whole customer experience.

After an amazing show at the WebRTC Conference and Expo, in which it took home the “Wow Factor” award, Voxeo Labs brought out the next piece of news, officially changing its name to Tropo Inc., in the style of its award-winning Tropo product. Having won several other awards as well, the company's president and CEO, Jason Goecke, called Tropo not only a strong product, but also a strong company and brand, thus reflecting at least some of the reason for the name change.

Then, FACEmeeting brought out a demonstration of its new platform, which is described as “one of the most advanced implementations to date.” FACEmeeting is geared toward presenting online meetings, using the WebRTC platform, in such a fashion that the face-to-face part of a meeting is particularly emphasized. But this preview demonstration was only the beginning, as the full beta version will be available later this year, complete with an array of new features to help make face-to-face meetings one-click simple.

Finally, we had a look at one of the great questions facing mobile providers dealing with WebRTC: where the revenue can be found. One of the better places to look was at the high end of the value scale, offering a premium experience for premium users. As for how to execute something like that, it was suggested that WebRTC can bring a particularly premium experience to shopping websites, which can in turn allow certain users access to the same kind of immediate question answering that might be had in a brick-and-mortar store.

That was the week that was in WebRTC, and with a slew of new products, solutions and ideas coming to the fore every week, it's no wonder that sometimes it's good to step back and take a closer look at things. Our global online community was on the hunt for fresh news every day, so be sure to come back next week for all the latest finds, as well as every weekend for our Week in Review!
