WebRTC Benefits Many Small and Medium Businesses

Since emerging in the market in 2011 as an open-sourced project by Google, intended to enhance real-time communications over a Web browser without requiring any additional steps such as downloads, plug-ins or installations, WebRTC has received mixed reviews.

While many consider the platform to be disruptive to the telecom industry and not capable of being efficient on a large scale, many small and medium sized businesses have found it to be beneficial and credit it with helping them expand their offerings. According to an article on the GetVoip website, five such businesses include Vacasa Rentals, ZenDesk, FreeCRM, Fresh Tilled Soil and MaxiAmigos.

Vacasa Rentals, a Portland-based company that provides professional rental management services for vacation homes in the western United States, has implemented WebRTC to make its internal phone system more effective. Employees now have WebRTC clients that run on their browsers, allowing the phone system to route a customer's call to an agent that is deemed most capable.

In May, software as a service customer service solutions provider ZenDesk replaced a Flash version of its embedded phone client with a WebRTC version to give agents access to better audio quality when dealing with customer calls from many different locations and thus varying reception signals.

FreeCRM, a customer relationship management software developer and application service provider, has turned to WebRTC to make it easier for sales individuals to conduct business. The platform combines PSTN and VoIP into one integrated service, allowing FreeCRMA users the ability to search for a contact on their account and call that person directly from their web browser.

Through the adoption of WebRTC, web development company Fresh Tilled Soil has added a feature that allows video chats to be embedded into any website, creating a new way of communicating with its employees, customers and other commercial businesses.

Similarly, Brazil-based online dating service and social network MaxiAmigos has utilized WebRTC to offer its users a new mode of communication by providing them with the ability to turn instant messages into voice calls, allowing for conversations to flow more smoothly and naturally.

These five examples, compared to ones that don't portray WebRTC in a positive light, just go to show how technology is in the eye of the beholder.
