WebRTC World Week in Review

WebRTC is bringing innovative in-browser conferencing technology both at Christmas and all through the year. Let's review this week's developments from the WebRTC World.

Yahoo wrapped up its holiday shopping with the purchase of PeerCDN. PeerCDN has created a next-generation content delivery network using WebRTC data protocol to move large amounts of data without having to store the data or provide transmission bandwidth. This protocol creates faster response times and lower bandwidth expenditures along with the enhanced content delivery experience that cheaper bandwidth enables.

Yahoo is working to enhance its content platform, and PeerCDN's capabilities can ensure reliable email delivery in addition to enhanced audio and video quality on Yahoo's websites. Yahoo hasn't commented on whether it wants to compete with Google's WebRTC-enabled browser, Chrome, or with Google's plans to include real-time communications in its Hangouts and Helpouts.

Also this week, Vidyo announced a new partnership with social networking and conferencing provider Rounds. Rounds, which combines communication with interactive content, videos and games, will now incorporate Vidyo's HD video conferencing capability through a WebRTC platform. Rounds users can video chat while browsing the Web, playing games, sharing YouTube videos or sharing photos.

Rounds is taking aim at Skype and FaceTime by focusing more on video conversations and less on text messaging, which is the purview of mobile apps like GroupMe and WhatsApp. With Vidyo, the company is drastically improving its infrastructure to deliver a superior video chat experience.

Finally, WebRTC World took a look back at some of this year's WebRTC Conference and Expo presenters. BrowseTel, a platinum sponsor, is a cloud service provider that has announced its aim to become the business WebRTC platform of choice.

BrowseTel offers a full in-browser telephony experience including free inbound and outbound calls from a single interaction point. Fax-to-email, instant messaging, conferencing for the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch, virtual receptionist and conference rooms are just some of the offerings in BrowseTel's HTML5-based telephony solution.

These stories give you a glimpse of what happened in WebRTC World this week. Check in with Webrtcworld for your daily dose of WebRTC, and enjoy the holidays and the coming New Year.
