WebRTC World Week in Review

The key to online communications and interactions today is real-time. As some companies lead the way in driving the momentum toward easy, fast and innovative online experiences with WebRTC, others are just learning how this real-time technology can be integrated into their products and applications. Either way, the awareness, development and growth is definitely heading up. Here are some of the top WebRTC stories this week.

This week I spoke to GoInstant, a provider of real-time APIs and a company that recently integrated its solutions with WebRTC. GoInstant started experimenting with WeBRTC at a hackathon, when developers brought up this “cool new technology” that was also about real-time. The company realized setting up WebRTC is not the easiest thing to do, so it sets out to eliminate those technical barriers – the server, configuration and backend technology – to make getting WebRTC up and running as easy and seamless as possible.

One potential use case for online video conferencing is using personal coaching sessions to lose weight. Retrofit Group is a new program designed to help with weight loss through a combination of hardware, software and personalized coaching sessions. The program decided to opt for video conferencing sessions for a few reasons.

Along the same lines of fitness is healthcare and improving personal wellness. Telemedicine, the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another, holds many promises if it is made widely available. With WebRTC, healthcare providers can access a platform with unlimited potential when it comes to reaching their patients.

IOCOM, a provider of enterprise video conferencing and collaboration software and solutions, recently added WebRTC to its line of Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS video collaboration clients. IOCOM’s Visimeet video conferencing software scales from desktop users to HD telepresence conference rooms with the same software and interface. It provides instant visual communications between multiple users over the Internet, and now offers WebRTC capabilities to expand Visimeet’s functionality to users.

Historically, one of the earliest adopters of both IM and VoIP has been the porn industry, followed close behind by people adapting the technology to suit their own personal creative needs. Being early adopters, these audiences have a tendency to bleed on the edge, so the question that had to be asked was whether they have a need for some testing tools. This week we looked at how WebRTC and the adult entertainment industry could benefit from each other.

The benefits of remote workers have been debated for some time, but the key to a productive remote workforce is effective communication. According to Jeff Hyman, who runs a data-driven weight loss company exclusively run by a remote workforce, working from home removes constant distractions and encourages collaboration with coworkers. Video conferencing and screen sharing are two convenient ways for workers to collaborate, communicate and receive feedback on their work.

Next week we’ll be in Miami for the Enterprise WebRTC Pavilion collocated with ITEXPO. Hope to see you there! If not, be sure to stop by WebRTC World to keep up.
