WebRTC Conference Organizers Name Joe Burton WebRTC Pioneer

Plantronics CTO Joe Burton has been recognized as a WebRTC pioneer by the WebRTC Conference and Expo organizers.

"One could argue that Plantronics has been in the business of 'WebRTC' long before there was a defined industry,” said TMC president Dave Rodriguez. “Under Joe Burton's leadership, Plantronics has been a pioneer in delivering communications devices and solutions that create seamless interaction over any network between people anywhere on the globe.”

Although Plantronics is best known as a headset manufacturer, the company has also been involved in the development of WebRTC, adding support for the browser-to-browser communications standard to its headsets. True to the spirit of the open standard, Plantronics has made the source code available on its website.

The code includes information such as call control as well as proximity and state information.

Other developers can make use of the code in their own products, building an ecosystem around WebRTC and Plantronics’ own innovations. While this might seem strange in an industry that guards its trade secrets more closely than Coca-Cola does its secret formula, such a move will ultimately benefit the the new technology.

Having developers unify around a single standard will avoid the “format wars” of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s around VHS and Betamax. Supporting open standards rather than proprietary technology makes a lot more sense in the Internet age. After all, every device supports TCP/IP almost exclusively compared to the older forgotten networking standards like NetBEUI.

The latest versions of Firefox, Opera and Chrome support WebRTC. Support from a major hardware company like Plantronics will prove the WebRTC is a viable standard.

The WebRTC Conference and Expo will be held from November 18-20 at the San Jose Convention Center, right in the heart of Silicon Valley. Major sponsors include Oracle, Dialogic, AudioCodes, Huawei, inGate and others.
