FRAFOS Releases ABC WebRTC Gateway, Supporting Better WebRTC Integration

Web-based real time communications (WebRTC) has made its presence known for more than a few businesses so far. A host of possible uses for the technology, ranging from easy access to video conferencing to a new connection method to add to websites and allow potential customers easy access to getting the answers said customers need regardless of the hour, have all come available in recent months. This new array of uses has driven new interest, and in support of that, FRAFOS has recently released its new ABC WebRTC gateway system.

FRAFOS was already well-known for its work in the session border controller (SBC) solution field, but now, with the ABC WebRTC gateway, it's taking a step into a closely related market. The ABC WebRTC gateway can be not only part of FRAFOS' ABC SBC system, but it can also be a gateway specifically designed to connect WebRTC and session initiation protocol (SIP) traffic as well. With either configuration, however, the FRAFOS gateway is designed to allow voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) operators to step up operations from just SIP and public switched telephone network (PSTN) services to a complete browser-based application simply and effectively. The gateway provides not only the necessary access controls and similar matters to ensure security, but also handles several of the other major needs of such a system, like rate limiting and monitoring capabilities to ensure optimal use of the network.

FRAFOS' CEO, Berthold Butscher, offered up some comment on the new release, saying “WebRTC technology is the final step towards a complete integration of real time applications and data. Until now, extending a web application required proprietary plug-ins or additional applications. With WebRTC, adding a video telephony service to a website will be just as easy as adding an email link. The ABC WebRTC gateway is a highly scalable and redundant software solution. In order to satisfy the varying needs of enterprises and VoIP operators, we designed the ABC WebRTC gateway to not only bridge WebRTC and SIP services but also to provide security, access control and denial of service (DoS) protection for WebRTC services.”

WebRTC poses many exciting possibilities for businesses, particularly those who want to reduce travel costs and improve customer service. The ease of being able to connect through two Web browsers and a handful of simple, off-the-shelf components offers a value that's hard to overestimate, and is a prospect that offers several different applications from just one platform. While some believe that WebRTC may be ultimately more hype than actual value, there are others who believe that the WebRTC market is just getting started. As more and more applications—not to mention tools like the FRAFOS gateway—emerge, the more use cases there will be for such systems, and the likelihood of such tools being adopted only increases.

FRAFOS' gateway may not be what every company needs, but there's little doubt that it, along with the growing number of developments in the WebRTC market overall, will likely help to drive this market forward. More and more firms will likely discover the value in this new technology, and work to make it part of current operating systems, a development likely to produce both cost savings and better opportunity for improved revenue, a development that is likely to help drive profitability and that ever-important bottom line.
