Tanzania hackers target AAI database [Mail Today (India)]

(Mail Today (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) IN A " sophisticated" software attack, hackers from Tanzania have reportedly breached the computer systems of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) — the body that manages the country's civil airports and land- to- land border terminals.

The incident came to light when a top official of the AAI's finance department complained to the cyber cell of the Delhi Police's Economic Offence Wing that his official e- mail account had been hacked. He also told the police that the email ids of all the airlines might have been hacked. S. Suresh — member finance, AAI — alleged that hackers sent emails to all foreign airlines using his official account and directed them to remit their dues immediately in a fake account.

The complaint was filed on April 24 with the cyber cell of the Delhi Police, which registered a case under Sections 66 and 66 C of the Information Technology Act at the EOW police station.

" After registering the case, we started the investigation. The complainant has submitted some sample emails sent by the hacker to other airlines. It came to the fore that the hackers are from Tanzania. The police have approached private airlines and enquired whether they had shared some internal details or given money to them or not," a senior police officer said on the condition of anonymity.

AAI is handling substantial amount of government money and dealing with more than 4,800 airlines and concessionaires.

Suresh, in his complaint, told the police that he came to know that his official e- mail id was hacked only on April 1 when he started receiving phone calls from all private airlines seeking some information regarding payments.

" After hacking his account id, hackers changed the reply address to finance@ aai. aero. tk, from which they sent mails to foreign airlines on March 31 and April 1 and asked them to pay their dues as soon as possible," said the police officer.

Although the complainant assured the cyber cell that he had directed his IT department to take all possible steps to avoid further damage, he said there was strong possibility that miscreants might have extracted official mail ids of all private airlines from AAI servers.
