Alan Arnette Starts Trek Up K2 to Raise Awareness for Alzheimer's Research and Raise Funds to Prevent and Cure Disease

AUSTIN, Texas --(Business Wire)--

Alan Arnette, world-renowned mountaineer and Alzheimer's advocate, is traveling to Pakistan this week for his first attempt at K2. In climbing arguably the world's most difficult mountain, Arnette is raising awareness and money for research for one of the world's most difficult diseases. Two not-for-profits dedicated to Alzheimer's research and education will benefit from the climb: Cure Alzheimer's Fund (CAF) and UsAgainstAlzheimer's (USA2). Abila is the primary sponsor for Arnette's K2 climb.

With this climb, Arnette hopes to convey the urgency needed to fight the disease, both in the private and public sectors, and to inspire people to participate and make a difference one step at a time. Arnette's "Memories are Everything" campaigns to support Alzheimer's research and awareness have included a multiple-peak 2008 project, "The Road Back to Everest," and the 2011 project, "The 7 Summits Climb for Alzheimer's." Since losing his mother to Alzheimer's in 2006, Arnette climbs in her memory, and for all those afflicted with the diseae, including their families and caregivers.

"Ever since my mother's untimely passing from this awful disease, I have devoted my life to raising money for Alzheimer's research, caregiver support and raising general awareness through my passion of mountaineering," said Arnette. "It's my hope that this mission will further these goals and help eventually find a cure for this debilitating disease. I'm truly grateful for Abila's support for a cause that is extremely personal."

As he begins his trek to K2, he will chronicle his progress on his website www.alanarnette.com/K2CureAlz or via Twitter (News - Alert) @Alan_Arnette, #K2CureAlz. To watch a video detailing his purpose visit: http://player.vimeo.com/video/93394918.

Arnette also challenges individuals to "join and inspire" him by supporting the fight against Alzheimer's through a peer-to-peer (P2P) fundraising campaign at http://www.alanarnette.com/blog/k2curealz/. His climb and fundraising campaign provide an opportunity for everybody to share their story in the battle against Alzheimer's, to donate and ultimately help change the outcomes of this disease.

"We are so excited to be working with Alan as he makes this amazing journey to help find a cure for a disease that has affected so many families in this country and around the world," said Krista Endsley, CEO, Abila. "Alan's courage and commitment to this cause inspire all of us. Once we heard Alan's remarkable story, we simply couldn't imagine not engaging with him to reach this goal."
