Imagine being able to video chat, instant message and share photos, videos, files and links with someone else on your Web browser in real-time with no plugins to download. The technology to make that happen is already here, and is the future of communicating through the Internet. Web Real-Time Communications (WebRTC) leverages software built directly into the Web browser to transform any Internet-connected device into a rich communications endpoint.
This country has had a love affair with L. Frank Baum's Land of Oz for more than 100 years. From dozens of books and comic books set in the land, to a wickedly popular Broadway show and, of course, beloved movies, we have traveled down the Yellow Brick Road to the land of munchkins and witches over and over again. And now, with the forthcoming release of the new Oz: The Great and Powerful movie, coming in March, Google and Disney have teamed up to take us there through the Chrome Browser. And, rather than using a hot air balloon or a handy tornado, WebRTC technology is one of the secrets to getting there.
I'll be the first to admit there are a lot of buzzwords in the realm of unified communications. I write about them daily, after all. It sometimes gets to the point where they just pass on by as another daily occurrence that doesn't even register.
