Break into Freelance App Writing

Is it really possible to make a living as a freelance app writer? Sometimes it seems like all the good ideas have already been taken, so it’s easy to get discouraged. Lots of prospective writers of application software assume that two things stand in their way, such as the competition is too stiff and, you need to be a tech genius to earn a decent living writing apps for games, business, finance, health, and other hot niches. While those common fears are partly based on reality, there’s still plenty of room in the industry for anyone who has the technical skills, perseverance, and initiative. Here are some of the things you should know before deciding to make the career leap into the app-writing universe.

You Need Basic Skills

Successful people in this industry are conversant in at least one of the many portable languages, like Unity or Xcode, and possess a firm grasp of coding. It’s also wise to know how to run a small business because that’s how you’ll be spending at least half your time after you get into the freelancing game. In fact, many of the biggest selling developers have more business and marketing education than technical skills. Remember, no matter how great your product is, profits will be at a minimum if you can’t find customers and keep track of your profits.

It’s Necessary to Pay Fees to Register with App Stores

Be ready to pay modest fees to all the big app stores out there. At one time, freelancers didn’t need to pay anything at all to register with a store and begin selling. But all the stores now view registration fees as a first-level screening tool for wannabe developers. Expect to pay a few hundred dollars in fees to get registered with the top four stores.

A Solid Education Helps

You can teach yourself most of what’s needed to become a freelancer in this business but a degree in one of the IT majors helps a lot. If you’re lacking funds for a college education, take out a student loan and do a few small projects on the side during your studies. The pro of getting an education loan is that you won’t have to hold down a full-time job during your time in school. Plus, you’ll be able to take advantage of competitive interest rates and other terms that student loans offer.

Use Feedback to Perfect Your Product

Learn to take the honest feedback from your early wave of users who post critical, sometimes harsh comments on the discussion boards in the app stores. Don’t take it personally or you’ll never survive in the rough and tumble marketplace. Your goal is to succeed, not to avoid bruised feelings. Use every bit of relevant feedback to make your product better. If someone notes, for example, that your game app is hard to navigate, go into the deep code and allow for simple navigation. If you constructively respond to every point of contention, eventually you’ll end up with a bulletproof product that brings in money and earns solid five-star ratings from users.
