Web Real-Time Communications (RTC) is an open source project that enables web Browsers with RTC capabilities via simple Javascript APIs. WebRTC implements the W3C’s proposal for video conferencing on the Web, which will ultimately eliminate VoIP and conferencing middlemen such as Skype.
The definition of service provider continues to shift as more and more Web applications start to blur the line between Web app and telephony service. There has already been a large number of companies announcing a move to WebRTC as the delivery mechanism for the latest version of their applications, and with this more creative ways of delivering well known services such as conferencing and click-to-dial continue to emerge.
Martin Körling, Ericssons’s head of Ericsson research, Silicon Valley, will deliver a keynote address at the WebRTC Conference and Expo, held from Nov. 27 – 29 at the South San Francisco Conference Center.

Körling led the creation of labs.ericsson.com, a successfully platform for showing Ericsson technology leadership, and leading concept development in the areas of Internet of Things, Network APIs and Web-TV. His keynote session, “Web RTC as a tool for Future Communications,” will focus on how to make use of WebRTC as a tool, and on what role WebRTC will play in future solutions for communication.
There are many ways to segment the evolving landscape of solutions: consumer/enterprise, Web/telecom, vertical/horizontal, standalone/integrated/contextual, mobile/fixed, etc. This points to the need for a platform approach, with core components and flexibility for integration, based on REST interfaces. Of key importance is to leverage open innovation, driven by mobile broadband, advanced devices and cloud software. Concrete examples show both how communication is added to vertical services and how horizontal enterprise communication can be enhanced. Carriers have key assets to build on, for example the universal address space of phone numbers and a scalable interconnected infrastructure.
David Jodoin, chief innovation officer at Thrupoint, will also be a keynote speaker at WebRTC. panel. Jodoin has a special interest in empowering the nomadic workforce and lives by his creed, “As engineers, it is our job to make our life more difficult in order to make the end-user’s life easier.” Thrupoint’s VP of Product Marketing and Management, Sajeel Hussain, will also participate on the WebRTC to SIP panel.
