WebRTC Outfit Bistri Simplifies, Expands on Video Calling

Bistri in the next few days will expand its WebRTC-based free video calling service to support up to four people per conference. That’s the word from Arnaud Budkiewicz, Bistri’s co-founder and CEO, who spoke with Webrtcworld this week in Atlanta, where TMC is holding the WebRTC Conference & Expo.

WebRTC supporter Bistri (pronounced “bee stree”) is simplifying video calling. It does that by providing individuals with their own links that others can click to reach them via a video call. There is nothing to install, and no registration is required.

Budkiewicz explains that when a person creates an account, the company tells his or her friends on Facebook that he or she has done so and announces that the individual is now available for video calls at the link.

More than 1.3 million people have created Bistri accounts to date.

This is a free service for end users. In the future, Budkiewicz says, Bistri expects to provide some premium options so users can customize their links with a company name, logo, or other graphics.

About two weeks ago, Bistri launched a Java script APIs and widgets to enable developers to leverage the platform.

“We try to make the video call accessible for any developer, even if he’s a beginner,” says Budkiewicz, adding that developers pay per call, not for the minutes.

Bistri continues to work to provide more features to developers, he says, adding that addressing mobile devices is the hardest part of WebRTC. To make it easier, Bistri now allows its platform to work for anyone on an Android smartphone or tablet.

In the future, Budkiewicz adds, Bistri also will develop the data channels. WebRTC is now focused on video and screen sharing, he says, but data is really important because it opens the possibilities of communications between computers. He mentions broadcasting and gaming as two applications for which WebRTC audio and video calling and other communications are a good match.
