WebRTC Demos Emphasize Simplicity, Interop, Rich Media, and Fun

The parade of demos was so long at the WebRTC Conference & Expo Wednesday night that I lost count. In any case, the audience seemed to be having a good time, and a wide variety of folks came to the stage in Atlanta to introduce their companies and products, and to demonstrate and talk about WebRTC. The connective threads that ran through many of the 19 or so demos were call quality, ease-of-use, interoperability, interworking, and rich media communications like videoconferencing and screening sharing.

Among the companies staging demos and/or otherwise telling their WebRTC stories during the Wednesday night demos were Alcatel Lucent, accompanied by vobi, bistri, Bit Action, Bolder Thinking, BrowseTel, Daitan Group, Dialogic, Instant Solutions, Mavenir Systems, Phono, Presence.com, Quobis, Sansay, Solaborate, symonics, TokBox, vLine, Vonage Mobile, Voxeo Labs, and Weemo.

TokBox, for example, demoed something called Oscar: a fun graphical interface to connect with others. The demo master manipulated a virtual globe to get to a city, then picked a picture to get a specific location, clicked on that and two bubbles with two people on live video windows came up against a background of blue skies.

“There’s nothing special about the app, it’s all about the experience,” the demo master said, apparently referring to the beauty of the interface and the quality of the communications, and adding that what WebRTC lets you do is everything you can to deliver an awesome experience.

He went on to initiate a four-way conference that appeared to be taking place at a park. And he mentioned that participants need not actually exist in the location that appears on the screen. Instead, he said, the first person who gets on the session can pick the virtual location, which he added frequently leads participants to start their conversation about just where they virtually are. It’s kinda fun, he added.

Arnaud Budkiewicz, co-founder and CEO of bistri, then showed a demo of an interface with his basic bio information and the contact information and presence of others. Someone initiated a live video call with him, he answered, the system took a photo booth-style snapshot of the two guys together in two videoconference panes, and the call commenced.
