WebRTC World Week in Review

WebRTC has a lot of potential to change the way we communicate online, especially as the Internet becomes more accessible than ever. Many people have explored the different possibilities of using WebRTC APIs in customer service, healthcare and education, but can WebRTC impact one of the most common corporate scenarios – the conference business? We explored that and some other top stories in WebRTC this week, check them out!

Some factors that have to be considered for WebRTC to be implemented in business conferences include message boards, archives, remote speakers and viewers, and the business model. Some solutions for challenges to these possibilities including a messaging moderator, connecting archives to show webpages, a social network for archives and a continual marketing campaign associated with events.

One business conference that generated a lot of hype about WebRTC was the WebRTC Conference & Expo, the most recent one happening in Santa Clara, Calif. The event made one thing clear: WebRTC is growing, fast. While 2012 and much of 2013 were spent talking about the potential of WebRTC, in Santa Clara the real beginnings of transformation were apparent. This transition will only accelerate in 2014 as we really begin to see markets adopt WebRTC.

In other news this week, Firefox got support for Google’s VP9 next-gen video codec. Overall, the video codec allows for compression or decompression of digital video. VP9 will be an option to the H.265 HEVC (high efficiency video coding) standard and provide for 4K video streaming. The IETF has yet to decide on a mandatory way to implement video codec standard for WebRTC.

There are videos that go viral, but this week in particular got thousands of people into the holiday spirit. WestJet, a Canadian airline, enabled virtual communication between passengers and Santa, and then took the campaign 2,000 steps further and actually bought customers items on their wish list. Not only is the real-time communications party of the campaign reflective of the potential of WebRTC, the messages behind it are also in line with the future of WebRTC.

An Italian real estate agency has implemented Wildix Kite, Wildix’s WebRTC-based solution integrated with corporate telephony systems, to increase and facilitate the contact with foreign customers. The Wildix solution enabled the agency to transform its website into a powerful marketing and communication tool. Its “Contacts” page now featured “Kite me” buttons to increase the flow of foreign customers and engage in chat, audio or video sessions with the right company representative in a single click.

A book by Rob Manson, CEO and co-founder of buildAR.com and chairman of the W3C Augmented Web Community Group, is targeted at developers and making WebRTC easy to understand and begin using. The book, “Getting Started with WebRTC,” offers an introduction to the technology and progressively gets more technical, leading to step-by-step instructions on creating WebRTC applications and examples of use case potentials. There was a lot going on this week, so be sure to check out WebRTC World for the latest industry reports, announcements, reviews and resources. Have a great weekend.
