Proper Implementation of WebRTC Requires a Holistic View of the Network

The appeal of adding WebRTC to an organization’s online communications options is undeniable. It’s a relatively straightforward and easy application that can quickly enhance a website and go a long way toward giving customers accessibility to your company. But there are a number of considerations that shouldn’t be ignored when implementing WebRTC and the most important factor is looking at the big picture.

That big picture is something that the Daitan Group specializes in analyzing. The company, which has a longtime background as a systems integrator in the traditional telecom and telephony space, has spent the past five to six years working with cloud-based offerings like WebRTC. And what they have found is that the entire network infrastructure is a factor for proper implementation of a WebRTC solution.

“I think one of the early misconceptions was with it [WebRTC] being a web technology, in other words, it’s just a case of taking the JavaScript code, putting it in and you’ve got two guys talking,” said Graham Holt, EVP sales and marketing for Daitan. “And that’s true, you can build that demo. But if you need a scalable, reliable solution, your WebRTC is a part of that, but you’ve got to think about the other elements.” Holt spoke with Carl Ford, CEO of Crossfire Media, about the usage case for WebRTC at the recent WebRTC Atlanta 2014 event.  View the entire interview below:

“I always advise people it’s really about the use case,” added Holt. “So think about what is it your users really want.” In the case of Daitan, interest in WebRTC has come from video conferencing companies as well as contact centers. Holt said they have also been working with vertical industries like healthcare providers and companies specializing in prison visitation systems.

The company takes a holistic view of the network infrastructure when implementing WebRTC and other solutions, analyzing how much scalability and interoperability is required so that traffic may move slowly and efficiently at all times. On that front, Daitan has also been following the network functions virtualization (NFV) space to ensure that clients infrastructure.

Ultimately, said Holt, having an agile approach to adding network features ensures that new features may be added and that all components are operating at the highest levels of efficiency and scalability.
