WebRTC World Week in Review: The New Abounds

This week in Web-based real time communications (WebRTC), it was all about the new. Not only did we have several new platforms and products emerge, but we also had new information about a major event in WebRTC to follow. So with all this new going on, it's easy to get lost in the shuffle. But that's a development that can be remedied easily enough with the help of a weekend, which we just now happen to have, and our Week in Review coverage!

First, news of a major event in WebRTC, the WebRTC Conference & Expo V, came out, as the agenda was announced. The event is set to run November 18 – 20 at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, California, and set to appear at the event are discussions around WebRTC standards, the next killer app in WebRTC, the global market for WebRTC systems, and much more. Plus, there will be opportunities to network within the industry, as well as product exhibitions showing off the newest developments in the field.

Next, we looked at BigMarker, a company that may have only recently kicked off a beta release, but represented a major development in Web conferencing as well. The new beta release allowed for the ability to accommodate up to 100 participants at a time on a conference, and allowed as many as nine of said participants to bring webcams into the picture. Several other upgrades arrived as well, making BigMarker a powerful new addition to the field.

Presence Technology accounted for the next bit of new, as its newly-updated Presence Suite 10.0 offered up a set of tools to add strength to the customer experience. Dialing privileges control systems, call forwarding rules, unified messaging tools and improvements to outbound call campaign executions represented some of the biggest additions to Presence Suite's capabilities. There were plenty of others besides, and Presence Technology doesn't seem at all shy about adding benefits as the situation warrants.

Then we saw how FRAFOS was getting involved in WebRTC with its new ABC WebRTC gateway. Part of its ABC session border controller (SBC) system, it could also be used as a straight WebRTC to session initiation protocol (SIP) gateway. It combines several useful tools to provide each function, including support for carrier-grade environments and cloud deployment mechanisms, allowing it incredible versatility in standard operations, including a variety of choices in terms of deployment.

Finally, we had a look at the blue ocean strategy, and how some new twists could improve profitability for communications firms.  Blue ocean strategy—based on the book of the same name—focuses more on looking for new and otherwise empty markets, as opposed to the “red ocean” of crowded, hotly-competitive firms. One example of this was Amazon's Mayday button, showing how WebRTC could be used with devices in a completely new way, and a way that other firms rushed to emulate.

That was the week that was in WebRTC, and it was clear there was a lot of new to be had. Our global online community was constantly on the hunt for new events, new products and new information to bring back, so be sure to join us back here next week for all the latest new, and every weekend as well for our Week in Review coverage!
