Dialogic's New PowerMedia XMS System Gives WebRTC Extra Power

Web-based real-time communications (WebRTC) is generating plenty of exciting new opportunities, but this is no miracle technology. It's also offering up some significant challenges in terms of bandwidth use and the like, so many companies are looking to address some of these issues and, hopefully, make non-issues of same before WebRTC can get truly widespread. Dialogic has something in mind to take on one critical challenge in its newly-unveiled PowerMedia XMS 2.1 software media server.

Dialogic's PowerMedia XMS 2.1 offers a way to easily mix media streams, while at the same time allowing for easy connectivity among legacy networks in place at many firms. This combination in turn allows for a simple way for companies to support the move to what are known as network functions virtualization (NFV) solutions thanks to a more ready connection to cloud environments.

PowerMedia XMS 2.1 also allows for critical cost savings to be brought in via the virtualization process, which in turn removes the burden of hardware ownership and allows companies to better focus on getting desired WebRTC setups established. With PowerMedia XMS 2.1, it's projected that some companies that otherwise wouldn't have become involved with WebRTC will step in thanks to reduced costs overall and an easier way to virtualize the process.

Several firms are already using a version of PowerMedia XMS to operate systems, like APEX Voice Communications. APEX has found that WebRTC offers great ways to get around the obstacles posed by current multimedia SIP—especially in terms of costs and complexity—and using PowerMedia, with its support for WebRTC media mixing, is a great way to get WebRTC on the ground and ready to go faster than the alternatives.

Given that current projections suggest that, by the end of 2013, fully one billion devices will be ready to go with WebRTC—including anything running Google's Chrome and Mozilla's Firefox browsers—that's a lot of potential for not just companies, but also individuals to get in on a new kind of communications technology. While originally, WebRTC was mainly thought to be useful as a point-to-point communications system, especially for very small parties, some are viewing WebRTC in a different light, particularly in its capability for multi-party sessions.

While under normal circumstances, WebRTC's value does somewhat lessen in larger group settings, media servers like PowerMedia XMS 2.1 can help offer better multi-party capabilities as well as offer improvements in sharing content and in collaboration. The collaborative features alone have many companies interested, as a mobile workforce is offering significant opportunity not only for cost savings, but also for productivity boosts.

Those interested in seeing PowerMedia XMS 2.1 in action will be able to do so during a live demonstration set to run during the WebRTC Conference & Expo, running June 25-27 at the Cobb Galleria in Atlanta, Ga. The PowerMedia XMS 2.1 demonstration, meanwhile, is set for June 26 at 5:20 p.m. Eastern time. Dialogic has quite a bit going on in the WebRTC space, so aside from that demonstration, there will be other important systems on offer at the show. Dialogic's recent efforts putting on a webinar on the topic proved to be one of the most successful webinars it had ever conducted, so there should be plenty to see.

WebRTC is a field with lots of potential, and additions to the field like PowerMedia XMS 2.1 should go a long way in terms of providing extra power to an already potent field, providing more options and giving this new technology some serious room to run.
