How WebRTC and IoT Will Change Communications

When people think about WebRTC, they inevitably think about Web browsers. Being that WebRTC is the technology that brings real-time video and audio communications to the browsers, it’s obviously an understandable connection to make. However, WebRTC has potential outside of simple commercial and business communications; according to Plantronics, this potential lies in the Internet of Things (IoT).

The Internet of Things refers to all the devices — washing machines, cars, medical devices — that are connected to the Internet. Like WebRTC, IoT has already begun creating opportunities for developers to change the way we interact with each other and the technology we use every day.

Joe Burton, CTO and SVP of Technology, Development and Strategy at Plantronics, believes that the two together have even greater potential to help developers radically change the world we live in quickly and economically. In fact, this is the topic that Burton will discuss during his keynote — entitled “Moving Beyond the Browser: Opportunities, Impacts, and Realities of WebRTC in an ‘Internet of Things’ World” — at the WebRTC Conference & Expo next week.

Best known for its wearable technology, particularly its headsets, Plantronics has taken an interest in WebRTC, having even added support for the communications standard on certain devices. At next week’s event, however, attendees will get a more complete idea of the company’s vision for WebRTC, as well as what challenges Plantronics believes stand in the way for the technology. The main focus of the keynote, though, will be what role WebRTC will play in the democratization of technology in the years to come, alongside the Internet of Things.

Burton will be joined by Cary Bran, Plantronic’s senior director of Innovation and New Ventures, during the keynote, which is scheduled for 8:40 a.m. on November 20. A panel furthering the discussion will take place the following day at 4:35 p.m.
