Seniors Turning to WebRTC, Video Chatting to Stay in Touch

For many older folks, technology is a confusing and even somewhat frightening thing. But there are those who have learned that technology now is designed to help in our everyday lives just as it was back when the older folks were younger folks; back when household appliances started coming out. One of the newest developments for seniors out there is the use of video chatting technology to keep better connected, and several firms are eager to get in on the growing senior citizen market.

Claris Healthcare is part of the forefront of this new development, with the recent release of its Claris Companion, a device that may look old-fashioned, but contains within it many of the tools required to better connect. Partially constructed from bamboo at last report, the Claris Companion offers a 10-inch touchscreen control system that boasts big buttons and well-amplified sound, so that issues of sight or hearing loss don't get in the way. Simple charging systems and magnetic alignment help keep the Companion ready to go at all times, and looking sharp with a wooden construction.

But while the Companion's design offers a great platform from which to work, it also offers plenty of exciting functions that help keep a senior independent for as long as possible, which is the ultimate goal of most every senior out there. Message and reminder functions help keep a busy senior going where he or she needs to be at any given time, and an array of options in healthcare-related content makes sure the senior has the necessary tools to remain busy. One of the newest options, however, is best related to keeping in touch: secure video calling.

With the Claris Companion, users can log into the Companion Console and immediately start a video call—or an audio call—without the need to add extra software, all thanks to Web-based real-time communications (WebRTC) technology. The use of WebRTC technology in the Claris Companion makes it easy to keep in touch, whether it's with healthcare professionals or with loved ones.  The Claris Companion also has it set up so that only invited contacts can make use of the connection systems, which keeps out spam and other unwanted content. The device can even be further personalized just to ensure that exactly the functions wanted are front and center at all times.

Seniors living alone can be a dangerous and risky business. All it takes is one fall, one slip, one overextension and they can be out of commission for some time to come, or potentially, even worse. That proposition only gets more pronounced when seniors live farther away from family members and other potential sources of help. A device like the Claris Companion, meanwhile, can not only help seniors keep in touch with family and assistance, but also provide further help that's not dependent on other people, giving seniors a technological edge that's easy to use and even helps with the various issues of hearing and sight that many seniors have.

While the Claris Companion may not be what every senior needs to remain independent, a technological advantage that's easy to use and powerful enough to offer many worthwhile functions is certainly a hard prospect to easily pass up. It's likely to find more than its share of interested users.
