Bistri Makes Video Conferencing as Easy as Sharing a URL

What does it take to win the Wow Factor award at the 2013 WebRTC Conference & Expo in Santa Clara, Calif.? Maybe a little fun with QR codes.

During his demo at the show, Bistri’s vice president of business development for the Americas, Jerome Calvo, showed the ease with which people could launch a video conference by initiating a chat using a QR code printed on a coworker’s shirt.

One quick scan of the shirt’s code and a video conference window opened. It was that simple.

“Bistri is like a swiss-army-knife of communications in the browser,” noted Calvo during the demo.

For its work, Bistri was awarded the Wow Factor award at this year’s WebRTC show.

The company offers a full-featured WebRTC chat platform geared toward one-click video chatting. A user shares his unique URL with another person (via chat, e-mail, QR code or any other means) and two people are good to go. Instant video conferencing.

This unique URL that people can share with each other to connect by video conference is a big part of what makes Bistri special.

“Each of our users are getting a unique link,” noted Calvo. “Their link is like an online phone number.”

The thinking is that users will use this link the way they currently give out their phone number and e-mail address.

Instead of having to share a username on a service and then have the other person go through the process of registering themselves, creating a username, downloading an application, testing settings and the other hassles that usually accompany even “simple” videoconferencing, Bistri dispenses with all that through WebRTC combined with its URL system.

Those who want to video chat just need to give out the URL to a friend and the process is done, not unlike sharing a phone number.

To make the process even easier, Bistri also has built gateways to all the major social networks, making it easy to import an address book and  start to video chat with friends right away.

APIs from Bistri also lets developers integrate their sites with Bistri technology, using it as a software-as-a-service platform.

Wow is right.
