WebRTC World Week in Review

Another big week in Web-based real time communications (WebRTC) has come to a close, and with plenty going on in the sector, it's worth taking a step back and taking a second look at some of the major events happening in the sector this week. Thankfully, with a weekend at hand, we have a chance to do exactly that with our Week in Review!

First came news from Temasys Communications, which netted the Visionary Award during the recently concluded WebRTC Conference and Expo held back in the closing days of June in Atlanta, Ga. Temasys Communications expressed several reasons it believed it had taken the award home, including a big-picture approach to the concept of communications, and the variety of technologies that went into the development of WebRTC Skyway, the company's new videoconferencing-as-a-service (VaaS) platform.

Next came word from the CEO of Requestec, who was quite ready to bring the company to the next WebRTC Conference and Expo event. Given that Requestec showed off a pair of new products during the event—including a video customer service solution for Akbank and its new Saypage video contact system set to go to work for the United Kingdom's National Health Service—it certainly wasn't out of line to suggest that Requestec would be eager to show off more new products with the arrival of the next WebRTC Conference and Expo event.

Solaborate, fresh off its “Best of Show” award-winning appearance at the recently-concluded WebRTC Conference and Expo, brought in the next piece of news as the company offered up some commentary on how WebRTC will impact the future of communication as we know it. Owing largely to the platform's accessibility—a Web browser and accompanying hardware is all that's necessary to operate a WebRTC system—it's likely to prove a significant game changer as far as Solaborate is concerned.

Then we had a look at a new opportunity to learn more about the field of WebRTC. Set to be offered at the upcoming ITEXPO event, August 26 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, the event in question will offer up seven hours of high-impact, lecture-style training featuring both Alan Johnston and Dan Burnet, both leaders in terms of establishing WebRTC standardization and in the authorship of the book “WebRTC: APIs and RTCWEB Protocols of the HTML5 Real-Time Web.” The session will cover a wide array of topics and give those present a much deeper understanding of WebRTC, the issues it faces, and the sheer potential it can offer.

Finally, we had a look at the WebRTC ecosystem, and its overall impact on not only WebRTC, but also on communications as a whole. Basically, growth in the WebRTC field is rapid, and climbing. There are new products, new services, new applications for the older stuff, almost every day. Just the number of attendees for the WebRTC Conference and Expo—the second show was said to have double the attendance of the first—shows that this field is gaining ground. With service providers getting interested as well, that only confirms things.

That was the week that was in WebRTC, and it was clear that this is, indeed, a platform with a lot of life left to it. It's still just getting started in a lot of ways, and that's making for plenty of new opportunity in the field. Our global online community, meanwhile, was kept very busy pulling in news on this sector, so be sure to join us back here next week for all the latest news in WebRTC, and of course, every weekend for our Week in Review!
