WebRTC World Week in Review

This was a particularly banner week for Web-based real time communications (WebRTC), as this week was also the start, and conclusion of ITEXPO at the Rio in Las Vegas. With that show comes a lot of new opportunities, and plenty of news to discuss. Now that the show has ended, and a weekend's afoot, we've got the perfect chance to consider all the biggest events. So settle in, put on another cup of coffee, and let's run down the biggest events of the week that was with our Week in Review coverage!

First, we had a look at WebRTC in general, and more specifically, six critical benefits that needed to factor into any discussion about bringing the service into play. The benefits in question covered the waterfront, ranging from the price of the basic WebRTC system—free, in some cases—to its interoperability, its voice and video quality as well as the security found with such a system. The benefits have different impacts for different kinds of users, so considering the benefits in light of these differences was important to keep in mind.

Next we got a closer look at TokBox's OpenTok platform, and a recent demonstration that the company offered to show off its capability. Since OpenTok has the ability to add WebRTC capability to websites that are currently active, and not just standard websites but also mobile sites, companies have the ability to make a new connection point at the most critical opportunity: when the user is clearly interested. OpenTok's scalability, versatility, and ease of use were also cited during the demonstration.

Getting people together from all over the world can often mean language issues, and it's been said that, should humans ever speak a common language, there would be nothing said humans couldn't do. Translate Your World gets us one step closer to such a phenomenon with its TYWI-Live, a program that can translate 78 different languages on the fly and in real time. It puts WebRTC to work as a way to increase its already impressive capabilities and make this translation software almost “Star Trek”-level capable.

Then we had a look at WebRTC and TeleSpeak, and how the two were looking to intersect. Just 18 months ago, TeleSpeak's co-founder and CMO, Chance Myers, knew very little about WebRTC, but that's a different matter now, and TeleSpeak now focuses on WebRTC to drive its product line. It became clear to Myers that WebRTC had plenty of capability to help bolster TeleSpeak's products, and that shows clearly in TeleSpeak's AnyWhere product, which Myers believes represents a head start against “the big guys” in the field.

Finally, remarks from ITEXPO's co-located event, FreePBXWorld, finished up news this week as Respoke full-stack marketer Billy Chia offered up a discussion on the major points of WebRTC, and just why this technology will have such an impact on communications. The price of WebRTC systems once again came up, but the increased Web development, the fundamental alteration of how the Web works in communications, and the increased number of endpoints created made this a technology with plenty to watch.

That was the week that was in WebRTC, and there was plenty going on in the field. With ITEXPO bringing plenty of news and the rest of the ecosystem contributing, our global online community was right in the thick of it, bringing back all the best in news. Be sure to join us back here next week for all the latest, and every weekend for our Week in Review coverage!
